Volunteer Cowichan is Hiring 2 Summer Students!

VOLUNTEER OUTREACH COORDINATOR

We are looking for a summer student to join our organization! You will work with a mentor to promote Volunteer Cowichan, volunteerism and volunteer opportunities around the Cowichan Region. As a summer student with Volunteer Cowichan you will perform some community based research by conducting surveys and interviews, developing marketing materials, entering data, and developing and delivering presentations throughout the Cowichan region related to volunteering.

Job Purpose

Working under the supervision of our Executive Director the selected candidate will fulfill a wide range of tasks.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The student will be responsible for the following:

  • Preparing community presentations, press releases, displays
  • Creating new marketing materials for Volunteer Cowichan
  • Connecting with the community regarding sponsorships and donations
  • Presenting at community events and meetings
  • Engaging with organizations, volunteers and community
  • Supporting project reporting including financial and other administrative requirements
  • Developing research  instruments including surveys, interview guides and supporting materials
  • Providing regular updates to the Executive Director
  • Presenting findings in written form
  • Building relationships within the community for future engagement

Competencies

Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following competencies: 

  • Building collaborative relationships - the ability to develop, maintain, and strengthen partnerships with others inside or outside the organization
  • Work independently to accomplish tasks as outlined
  • Fostering teamwork - the ability and desire to work cooperatively with others and the ability to demonstrate interest, skill and success in getting public participation.
  • Effective oral and written communications - public speaking, listening and writing clearly using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
  • Respectful engagement - ability to engage all participants including youth, communities, social service groups, organizations and businesses.
  • Results oriented - the ability to identify and carry out actions necessary to complete tasks and obtain desired results in a timely and organized manner.
  • Independence/Initiative - ability to work autonomously, identify what needs to be done and carry it out before being asked or before the situation requires it.
  • Creativity/innovation - developing new approaches or utilizing traditional practices to make improvements, solve problems or create opportunities. 

Qualifications

Successful candidates must demonstrate the following qualifications;

  • Some high school or post-secondary education and registration in an educational institution in the fall
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills, with a respectful and confident demeanour
  • The ability to speak in front of groups, lead discussions and carry out interviews
  • Computer literacy including email, social media, Microsoft (Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe)
  • Event planning and tourism experience an asset
  • Student with disabilities/Aboriginal ancestry considered an asset

Experience

  • Experience producing written materials
  • Marketing experience

VOLUNTEER CENTRE SPECIALIST

You will be working as the front line receptionist under the guidance of a mentor. Promoting Volunteer Cowichan and volunteer opportunities, your specialty will be linking community members to opportunities and services around the Cowichan Region. As a summer student with Volunteer Cowichan you will perform some follow up with volunteers, and community organizations to survey satisfaction in the referrals and the centre.  The successful candidate will also work at community events alongside the Community Volunteer Outreach Coordinator.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contacting a wide range of community organizations to acquire volunteer opportunity postings
  • Engaging community members
  • Presenting at community events and presentations with CVOC
  • Engaging with organizations, volunteers and community
  • Supporting administrative requirements such as filing, bank deposit preparation, answering phones and taking payments for handyDART tickets, and Better at Home services
  • Developing research  instruments including surveys, interview guides and supporting materials
  • Providing regular updates to the Executive Director
  • Updating the website, Facebook and other relevant social media sites
  • Building relationships within the community for future engagement

 Competencies
